This recipe comes from an old pamphlet put out by Imperial Sugar. Serve warm with whipped cream and orange marmalade and a cup of hot tea.
Cover the raisins with boiling water and let stand about 5 minutes. Drain and allow to cool.
Combine the biscuit mix, spices, and 2 tablespoons sugar. In another bowl, combine the egg and tea with the raisins. Stir this into the biscuit mixture.
Preheat oven to 450º F and place a teaspoon of butter in an 8-inch square baking dish. Put the dish in the oven for about a minute until very hot (the butter will have melted). Pour the biscuit batter into the pan and bake 10 minutes.
Meanwhile, whip the cream with a fork, adding 2 tablespoons of sugar. Brush this over the biscuit loaf.
Turn the oven to broil. Place the loaf under the broiler to brown the glaze.
Makes 9 squares. Leftovers can be re-heated or toasted.
